Planning permission may not be required for many rooftop solar PV installations, provided they meet the relevant exemption limits and conditions, such as restrictions on panel area, height and projection. Larger systems, ground-mounted panels, or homes in protected structures or certain Architectural Conservation Areas may need permission. If required, apply to your local authority’s planning department with the prescribed forms, fee, site location map and drawings; contacting the council for pre-planning advice can be useful. Planning permission and any SEAI solar PV grant are separate matters, so check the current rules with your local authority and an SEAI-registered installer.
