In many cases, household solar panels in Ireland can be installed without planning permission under exempted-development rules, provided the relevant conditions are met. Restrictions may still apply to factors such as the panel position, projection, ground-mounted systems, protected structures, architectural conservation areas or other sensitive locations. Planning rules and grant requirements are separate, so planning exemption does not guarantee eligibility for an SEAI solar PV grant. Check with your local authority or a suitably qualified installer before work begins, especially if your property has a protected or unusual status.
